Since the beginning of 2017, the European Union has banned the production of cars using R134a refrigerant for environmental reasons. Its replacement is HFO-1234yf, which is 350 times less harmful than R134a, its lifetime in the atmosphere does not exceed 11 days, has a global warming index GWP of only 4 - compared to 1430 of R134a - and is compatible (with some modifications) with air conditioners using R134a.
Unfortunately, 1234yf is flammable and highly toxic when burned. The solution to this problem is provided by the R744 A/C system that uses CO2 (CARBON DIOXIDE) as a refrigerant, which is a natural product, non-flammable,non-toxic to the environment and a global warming index of GWP 1.
